Before and after footage shows the scale of a four-day clear-up operation following the Boardmasters festival in Newquay, UK.

Shots captured on August 13 and August 20 show masses of tents, plastic bags, and bottles left. Whereas the latter clip shows an immaculate field, clear of litter.

The festival's organisers have been attempting to achieve better recycling rates with more tents being repurposed and food donated.

On top of this, as part of Boardmasters’ litter-bond scheme guests are encouraged to collect and return a bag of litter in order to redeem a £10 deposit taken as part of the overall cost of their ticket.

The Boardmasters 2023 The post-event clean-up is a huge and somewhat controversial task. This year the task is completed in record time Boardmasters have been held to account in the past and endeavour to ensure they complete their site clearance in the timeline advertised. Here within six days the huge festival she has been returned to farm pasture in the condition before the event. An enormous amount of litter and abandoned camping kit is gathered and sorted to avoid landfill wherever possible.

Boardmasters Festival working with a new supplier for 2023 who specialise in sustainability, proudly sending ‘zero-to-landfill’ with their dedicated knowledge on proper practise, working alongside the events own ‘Green Team’ and salvagers - they hope to be able to achieve better recycling rates and faster clean up, with more tents being repurposed and food donated than ever before. They have also invested heavily in a large workforce and additional, specialised cleaning infrastructure machinery in order to speed up the operation and allow for a more thorough and comprehensive process.

On top of this, as part of Boardmasters’ ‘litter-bond scheme’ guests are encouraged to collect and return a bag of litter in order to redeem a £10 deposit taken as part of the overall cost of their ticket. This encourages people to assist with clearing the site and speeds up the process exponentially. Many festival goers took their tents and equipment with them, sadly many still do not, with gear and tents abandoned after just one festival use. The festival aims to be sustainable and has taken action such as repurposing 20 acres of land for bird life. 200,000 reusable cups used, 3,600 miles of beach clean, 13,500 bags of rubbish self colllected under the litter bond scheme, £25,000 to Surfers against Sewage and £80,000 donated to local charities. In addition this year The Sands Resort hotel adjoining the festival campsite has donated the payment from Boardmasters directly to Newquay charity DISC which looks after local hungry and homeless.
