Streetlights pose road hazard as they flash 'like disco lights' along road in Thailand
Streetlights posed a road hazard as they flashed 'like disco lights' along a mountain road in Thailand.
The streetlamps sparked worry among villagers, who said the strobe-like display was a distraction for drivers travelling on Doi Suthep mountain in northern Chiang Mai province.
Footage shows the lampposts flickering on and off at a bend on the road, with the flashes potentially causing a seizure for sensitive individuals.
The residents complained that numerous streetlights, from the road entrance to the tourist viewpoint near the summit, had been malfunctioning for a month.
Authorities reportedly idled without making repairs, while locals said they were unsure whether to contact the Suthep Subdistrict Municipality or the Department of Highways to take action.
They said the lights added to the danger of driving on the steep and winding path.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
