Man transforms mobility scooter into mini camper van that’s completely road-legal
A man has transformed a mobility scooter into a mini camper van – and it’s completely road-legal.
Jason Black spent two months building it.
It is based on the classic Volkswagen camper.
The blue minivan has a top speed of 8mph.
Jason, 56, purchased a ‘Class 3’ scooter for £200.
It is the only powered wheelchair that can be used on the road.
However, the entire DIY project, including all the details and finishes, set the furniture salesman back £1,500.
Jason had to ensure all the mini features were made to scale for the 80cm tall motor.
The tiny camper features indicators from a Fiat 500.
It also has lights from a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
The classic VW front badge has been stuck on the front of the motor.
It has wing mirrors and even its own licence plates.
The camper even has its own tax disks from the 1960s for a realistic touch.
Jason said: “I’m fascinated by small things.
”I saw a picture of a small camper van in America and I thought, ‘That’s so cool.'
”I tried to do a bit of research from there and how you go about building one.
”Initially, I wanted to build a go-kart.
”But, I soon realised, they use petrol, which is not too welcome on pavements.”
Jason says he loves to drive the mini camper van around Scotland and take pictures of it.
However, he admits that locals have a mixed reaction.
”The way I wanted to build mine was to sit low so you only see the head.
”I use round town and take it places in Scotland.
”I’ve had few people stop me thinking it was a kid driving.”
”They either love it or hate it.
” People stop you all the time to smile and laugh or they totally ignore it and don't see the point.
“A very good friend can't stand it – all he keeps saying is, ‘why?’
”Porsche used Volkswagens as service vans in the 60s – so I got the Porsche sign written on it – a lot of people think it’s a Porsche.”
After creating the mini camper, Jason built a second body in a classic, VW green colour.
He switches between the two bodies on his adventures out with the van.
He added: “There is no point to it at all - it just makes people smile.”
