On Monday, October 23, 2023, a fox attempted to hunt rabbits near Vienna's Schoenbrunn Zoo. This followed a recent incident at the zoo where American flamingos were left unsecured overnight, leading to a fox attack on October 16.

Regrettably, most of the flock perished. Zoo staff forgot to move the flamingos indoors and activate the electric fence, allowing the predator to enter. Only two flamingos survived and were relocated to another zoo.

A nearby resident also spotted the fox trying to catch rabbits, raising suspicions it was the same fox responsible for the flamingo incident. The zoo plans to enhance safety measures, including setting live traps with expert assistance from the Climate, Forestry, and Agriculture Department. As a result, the zoo now houses only a colony of greater flamingos.
