This footage was filmed and produced 21 October 2023.
In a rescue mission captured by a police officer's body cam, a kayaker was saved from Long Lake in Michigan on October 21, 2023, after capsizing. The footage shows the police officer and a helpful bystander launching a boat and making their way to the kayaker, who had been in the water for about an hour. They managed to pull the 37-year-old kayaker, whose name hasn't been disclosed, safely onto their small boat.
The Michigan State Police Seventh District released a statement on October 22, confirming the incident. The distressed kayaker, a 37-year-old from West Olive, had overturned and called 911 for assistance. Trooper Park from the Michigan State Police Traverse City Post responded to the call. The air temperature was 47 degrees Fahrenheit (8.3 degrees Celsius), with the water temperature at 53 degrees Fahrenheit (11.6 degrees Celsius). The kayaker, who had been in the water for about an hour, was experiencing signs of hypothermia and a loss of fine motor skills. He was transported to Munson Medical Center Traverse City for treatment by Long Lake EMS.
The rescue operation also involved the Long Lake Fire Department, local citizens, and various law enforcement and emergency services.
