Heavy smog caused by air pollution enveloped a city in northern China.

Video filmed in Tianjin on October 31 shows the thick yellow fog and haze blanking a city, causing the visibility to be less than 50 metres.

Local authorities escalated their fog and haze alerts to the maximum.

Dong Gaohong, the chief forecaster at Tianjin Meteorological Observatory, said that there are two main reasons for the smog. Firstly, the recent temperatures have been unusually high, there has been no significant influence from cold air, and there have been consecutive days of calm and stable weather. The regional surface wind field is overall weak, with high humidity and temperature inversions in the mornings and evenings, resulting in poor atmospheric dispersion conditions that are conducive to the development of fog and haze.

Secondly, during this period, there have often been converging wind fields that lead to the rapid accumulation of pollutants, creating high-value regional pollution areas near the convergence lines.

Affected by the cold air, from the evening to the night of Thursday (November 2), the conditions for atmospheric dispersion and visibility will improve, and the fog and haze will gradually weaken and dissipate.
