Over 55 Just Stop Oil supporters from South Wales, the North, and the South West of England were arrested on Tuesday morning while protesting against the UK government's plans to license new oil and gas. The supporters were marching around Waterloo Roundabout and over the bridge when the Metropolitan Police intervened and issued a Section 7 order from the Public Order Act 2023.

This comes after over 100 Just Stop Oil supporters were arrested on Monday for marching down Whitehall from Trafalgar Square. Although it was incorrectly reported on social media that Just Stop Oil supporters had targeted the cenotaph, it was later confirmed by the Met that it was the police who had moved Just Stop Oil supporters towards the cenotaph after arresting them.

Sixteen people were held in police custody and appeared in court at Stratford, Westminster, and Bromley Magistrates Courts on Tuesday. Five people remain in police custody and are expected to appear in court this morning after being held for over 45 hours.

One of the protesters, Geraldine Swift, a 57-year-old NHS consultant psychiatrist, explained her motivations for breaking the law, stating that she believes the level of risk and urgency justifies her actions. She called on Rishi Sunak to stop all new exploitation of fossil fuels and urged people across Britain to join her in demanding action for the sake of the planet, our health, and our children.

The arrests highlight the growing frustration among environmental activists who are calling for urgent action to address the climate crisis. The Just Stop Oil movement is expected to continue its protests in the coming days.
