STORYLINE:

Under the theme of "The new urban era," the 12th edition of the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) was held in Barcelona from Nov. 7 to 9.

With over 1,000 exhibitors from 800 cities in about 140 countries and regions, this year's event is the largest in its history, according to the organizers.

With innovative technological solutions, talks, workshops and networking, the SCEWC focuses on such key areas for urban transformation as mobility, environment, energy and infrastructure.

"This year is the year to take action. This is very important. We've talked a lot about the fact that there are problems in the world and many challenges, but now what we have to do to solve them is get down to business, roll up our sleeves and start solving them.
We talk about self-driving vehicles or flying taxis, and they will come, but there are also many solutions, related to energy efficiency, monitoring air quality, managing data, which can be implemented tomorrow and which are very simple solutions but that improve our lives."

Innovations like robots, drones, autonomous vehicles and virtual reality, and AI data management, monitoring and lighting systems are the highlights of the expo.

Exhibitors included major tech firms like Aramco, Cisco, Deloitte and Microsoft, as well as delegations from countries around the world such as China, Estonia and France, Brazil, Germany.
