STORYLINE:
Turkish archaeologists have discovered a lion mosaic during excavations in the northwestern province of Duzce, state media reported on Thursday.
The excavations in the ancient city of Prusias ad Hypium are located in the Konuralp district of Duzce, the state-run TRT broadcaster reported.
Experts believe that the newly-discovered mosaic room represents a late Roman era cult area, where a society or a group of people practiced a lifestyle that included specific values, beliefs, traditions, art, and other cultural elements.
It was found that the entire room was covered with a mosaic floor consisting of finely crafted white, blue, yellow, green, and brown tesserae (small mosaic stones of various colors).
The artifacts unearthed inside the room also included depictions of drums and flutes.
Duzce mayor Faruk Ozlu said in a statement that the newly-discovered room with mosaics right in the middle of the theater axis was "well-preserved."
