This footage shows the moment the strong earthquake struck and what looks like ceiling panels falling inside a shopping center in Toyama City.

A strong earthquake hit the Noto Peninsula on Japan's northwest coast on New Year's Day, January 1, leaving devastating damage and triggering the first Major Tsunami Warning since the 2011 earthquake in northeastern Japan.

At least 30 dead were confirmed, and several residents were still stranded inside the collapsed homes, according to latest reports.
