Lorry Driver Rescues Crash Victims in Icy Ordeal in Cambridgeshire, UK
This footage was filmed and produced 10 January 2024.

In a gripping series of events on Upwell Road, just over the Cambridgeshire border, 26-year-old Luke Wagner, a lorry driver, became an unexpected hero during the early hours of a frosty morning on the 10th of January.
Wagner's account, filled with quotes, unveils the remarkable story of courage and teamwork that unfolded on that icy road.
Wagner recalls the moment he witnessed a flipped car in a ditch: "I was driving along Upwell Road just before 8 am when I came along a black car on its roof in a ditch. I noticed it still had all of its lights on, so I stopped next to a pickup truck that was also on the scene, to make sure they were alright."
Describing the icy conditions, he emphasizes: "Having seen how icy the roads were that morning, I didn't want to pass an incident so recent in case they needed help."
Recalling the decision-making process, Wagner shares: "I contemplated jumping in, at the risk of getting hypothermia and possibly getting myself in trouble with the rapidly sinking car."
"Fortunately, a few other individuals had stopped and climbed down to assist me, one providing a line for us to throw out to him."
Highlighting the fortunate outcome, Wagner mentions: "By the time we got him out, his car had already sunk beneath the water. We later found out that his driver's window had smashed when his car impacted the water; I think he was incredibly lucky that had happened, otherwise, he would've had a much harder time getting out."
After the rescue, Wagner played a role with the police. He provided statements, guided the officers around the scene, and explained the sequence of events. Recounting the entire incident, Wagner mentions staying at the scene to assist the police for as long as necessary. Once they were satisfied with the information, they informed him that they would take his place on the road, allowing him to leave.
