SOUNDBITE (English): CHARMAINE SCOTTY, Nauru's Minister for Health, Culture, Tourism
"My name is Charmaine Scotty. I am (Nauru's) Minister for Health and also for Culture and Tourism. Tourism is very new in Nauru, we're hoping to promote it.
Like you will see in the news, in the internet that Nauru is one of the least visited countries in the world, like very far away from everybody. It's like very small. It doesn't have very much infrastructure.
There's a lot of interest also from the Nauru people in promoting our culture, you know like our traditional sports, our way of fishing, like our Nauruan lifestyle.
Especially we are trying to promote the youths in the tourism area. And we need a lot of help because it's really new.
I think there is a lot to be gained, especially for us, Nauru.
It will definitely improve the infrastructure, like you know build more places for accommodation. And it will also work for the airline, and also for the people like, you know the accommodation, like transportation, all those kinds of things. And I think it would be very good if somebody from China comes to teach us Chinese. So we can learn how to speak Chinese.
Tourism is a big revenue, not just for the country, but also for individual people individual families, groups, communities, villages, districts.
It is also a big unattempted resource for the country. So we hope that it becomes big enough for income and for promoting the lives of Nauruans.
We welcome you to come to our island and meet us and bring whatever you can to teach us about your country, because this is you coming from a very big country to a very small place, and we can learn a lot from you."
