Raging wildfires threaten homes in Pringle Bay, South Africa
A coastal village that was ordered to evacuate on Thursday is now faced with a renewed fire that has been a cause for worry and prompted emergency measures.
Officials said the Western Cape in South Africa is currently engulfed in wildfires and this poses a serious threat to Pringle Bay locals.
This fire, called Hangklip Road Fire, has been burning since Monday January 29. The flames have already destroyed one of the recently repaired Hangklip Hotels, with aerial resources now sent to back up the ground teams fighting against them.
Two chalets along with an outhouse have also been burnt down with another cottage resulting into about 800 hectares of vegetation around Pringle Bay turning into ashes due to the fire.
Another separate fire in Buffelsjag nearby has scorched around 7,500 hectares and remains uncontrolled.
Anton Bredell, Western Cape MEC for local government, environmental affairs and development planning, said he is seeking provincial disaster classification from the National Disaster Management Centre as fires spread across the province.
He added: 'This classification would enable access to funding and also resources to enhance firefighting efforts.'
Heather Morkel who is Secretary of Pringle Bay Ratepayers Association warned that danger looms due to hotspots and the unpredictable nature of wildfires, especially when southeasterly winds are dominant.
She said: 'Residents are anxious because of these hotspots that may result from any wildfire.'
