Dancing on Broken Glass, Another Feature of the Plate Dance

Buy video

The plate dance typical of West Sumatra, Indonesia, is well known throughout the world.
The plate dance movement begins by placing two plates on the palms of both hands.

The plates were swung quickly without slipping out of hand.

The most interesting performance of this dance is when the dancer throws the plate up. It depicts joy over a bountiful harvest.

Then the plate will fall and break on the floor.

This causes the glass shards to scatter around the dancer.

Dancers continue to perform dance movements on broken plates.

It was truly miraculous because the dancer's feet were not injured even though they were not wearing footwear when they stepped on the broken glass.
