Body of A Missing Mountaineer Recovered After Fall in Leon's Ribota de Sajambre, Spain

The Civil Guard has recovered the lifeless body of a 73-year-old mountaineer from Oviedo (Asturias) who had been missing since Thursday while descending the 1,739-meter peak of Niajo towards Ribota de Sajambre (Leon), accompanied by two other individuals.
According to the Government Subdelegation on Friday, at around 5:15pm on Thursday, the companions of the missing mountaineer informed authorities that he had strayed from the route during the descent and had not returned to the village.
The Special Mountain Intervention Group (GREIM) from Sabero (Leon) was immediately activated and dispatched to the location of the incident. They located the mountaineer near the peak, who had tragically fallen from about 70 meters height.
Once the judicial authority authorized the removal of the body, it was taken to the Forensic Anatomical Institute in Leon for an autopsy.
Due to the challenging terrain and the fact that the rescue had to be carried out at night, the GREIM from Cangas de Onis (Asturias) also assisted with the recovery of the body alongside the GREIM from Sabero.
