Proposals to turn a former RAF barracks and prison called Northeye near Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex into migrant housing were announced in April 2023.

Since then, very little has happened. In November details were revealed of the purchase price paid by the Government from a commercial organisation called Brockwell Group Bexhill LLP.

This enterprise had paid the UAE government £6.31 million for the whole site in August 2022. Thirteen months later the government handing over £15.3 million, handed Brockwell enterprise a profit of nearly £9 million in just over a year.

The site has a long history, having been a radar station in the wake of the Second World War. In the late 1960s, it was reopened as HMP Northeye - a category C prison.

It closed as a prison in the early 1990s and has been refurbished and used as a training campus and for foreign students.
