Students fled screaming when a storm blew out the windows while they were in the classroom.

Footage shows the gusts battering the room at the Jiangxi Vocational College of Science and Technology in Nanchang in Jiangxi, China, on April 2.

The force of the blast smashed glass and whipped up books and papers which were sent swirling around together with torrential rain. As the video shows, the room instantly turned into chaos although none of the students were injured.

The school was closed in the wake of the April 2 incident with a spokesman saying subsequent class schedules were adjusted according to weather conditions.

The school organised a campus inspection that night, focusing on possible safety hazards after the heavy rain.

The meteorological department also issued several emergency warnings, warning the public to pay attention to possible hazards caused by thunderstorms, strong winds and hail.

After declaring a level four emergency response to heavy rain earlier in the day, the NanchangMeteorological Observatory issued a red alert for strong winds at 5:25 pm, which followed a red alert for hail at 4:35 pm, the first time since 2011 that two red alerts were issued within an hour.

Two hours later, the Jiangxi Provincial Meteorological Bureau activated level four emergency response to strong winds, a first for Jiangxi.
