Brazil: Helicopter crew rescues 2 year-old baby in a flooding disaster zone

The incident was filmed during rescue operations being carried out by the army in Rio Grande do Sul over the weekend following flooding that has claimed 56 lives.

The tot, who is reportedly two years old, was rescued by the soldiers in a helicopter in Bom Retiro do Sul who smashed roofing tiles in order to reach inside and pull the young child to safety.

The images of the rescue were recorded by the camera of Third Sergeant Lucas Ferreira Leite.

The tot was handed over by Lucas to Andrwis, who was at the aircraft door. Then, the military rescued the mother and then the grandmother.

According to a Civil Defence bulletin, 281 municipalities were affected, leaving 8,296 people in shelters and 24,666 citizens homeless. The number of missing people reaches 67. There are currently 74 injured.

Also according to the state Civil Defence, at least 350,000 residential and commercial locations remain without electricity.

The consequences of the rain also continue to affect telecommunications services across the state, making rescue work difficult.

Customers of the TIM operator in 63 cities are without access to telephone and the internet. Vivo users from 46 municipalities are also unable to access the services. Claro faces problems in 19 locations.
