A dramatic rescue unfolded in Cruzeiro do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, on May 2, 2024 as a couple was airlifted to safety from the rooftop of their home by a Military Brigade helicopter. The state has been battered by heavy rains since Sunday (April 28), resulting in widespread flooding and chaos across the region.

In a video released by the brigade, the couple can be seen clinging to each other atop their almost submerged residence. First, the woman is lifted to safety, followed by the man. Although the brigade did not provide details on their condition, both individuals appeared uninjured.

The death toll has climbed to 29 and is expected to rise further as rescue teams struggle to access certain areas, Governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) announced Thursday. The torrential downpours have impacted 154 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul.

The incessant rainfall, which began on Sunday, prompted Governor Eduardo Leite to declare a state of emergency on Wednesday (May 1). He described the situation as potentially the worst disaster in the region's history in terms of material losses. The federal government acknowledged the state of emergency on Thursday (May 2).

Governor Leite also addressed concerns about the leaking Dam 14 de Julho in a video posted on his Instagram profile on Thursday (May 2). He assured residents that the dam's breach would not result in a flood but advised those in low-lying areas to seek higher ground and evacuate if necessary.
