Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil - May 9, 2024

Flooding caused by rainfall and overflowing rivers in southern Brazil left an unprecedented level of devastation that has already claimed at least 107 lives, while more than 130 people are still missing.

According to authorities, it is the worst natural disaster in the history of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The state capital, Porto Alegre, continues to receive rainfall that left part of the city in darkness and without water. Wednesday's rains caused the city council to halt rescue operations for stranded people.
