Bioluminescence turns Blue Flag beach blue in Kent, UK

Buy video

A Blue Flag beach actually turned blue in a stunning display of bioluminescence in Kent, UK late on Saturday evening (May 18) into Sunday (May 19).

A vivid electric blue colour could seen as waves broke along the shore line and pebbles were thrown in the sea at Sheerness beach on the Isle of Sheppey.

The magical effect is caused by bioluminescent plankton, small creatures in the sea that emit light when disturbed by motion.

The rare occurrence was spotted between 10.30pm and 1am local time.
