Afghanistan: Situation remains dire in northern Afghanistan after devastating floods
Sar-e Pol Province, Afghanistan - Recent
Storyline:
The flood-affected areas in northern Afghanistan are still in a dire situation after being hit by intense downpours nearly two weeks ago.
Torrential rains on May 10 led to continued flash floods, killing more than 300 people and leaving thousands of others injured.
Sar-e Pol Province is one of the worst-hit regions due to the floods.
After getting into remoter areas hit by the disaster, a reporter with China Global Television Network (CGTN) saw the road became bumpier, bridges were torn apart and houses were damaged, while local farmers have lost their livestock and crops.
In addition, according to locals, they lack drinking water, food and aid.
Because of bad traffic conditions, no NGOs or governmental organizations can reach the area in a timely and effective manner, they said.
Those lucky ones escaped, but also still suffered great financial loss. Some elderly were evacuated to safer places.
However, the situation is still alarming and many lives are in danger.
So far, the severe flooding has killed more than 300 people and left thousands of others injured.
Afghanistan is among the most vulnerable countries to climate change. It has been experiencing a rise in extreme weather conditions, including floods and drought, over recent years, according to the United Nations.
