Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi on Sunday announced the formal start of the process of calling and holding early presidential elections following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi on Sunday in a helicopter crash.

Vahidi's decree orders the governors of Iranian provinces and cities to set up executive election commissions within three days.

Article 131 of the Iranian Constitution states that elections must be held no later than 50 days from the day of the death or declaration of incapacitation of a president.

The day after Raisi's death, representatives of the three branches of the Iranian state met and agreed on 28 June as the date for the vote.

On Sunday, the Iranian Electoral Headquarters announced that the deadline for nominations will be open between 30 May and 3 June. The Revolutionary Guards Council will then intervene and publish a final list of approved candidates about two weeks before the elections.

The election campaign as such will begin on 12 June and run until 27 June, according to the timetable published by the Iranian authorities.
