On May 29, an eruption has commenced in Reykjanesskagi, near Sundhnukur north of Grindavik, sending shockwaves through the region. The eruption, which commenced at 12:46, appears to be following a trajectory reminiscent of the previous eruption on the Sundhnuksgigarodum.

In response to the imminent threat, precautionary measures were swiftly enacted, with authorities clearing areas including Grindavik, the Blue Lagoon, and the Svartsengi power plant before noon. The evacuation procedures proceeded smoothly, ensuring the safety of residents.

Despite the concerted efforts of responders, challenges persist in Grindavik, where three residents have chosen to remain despite advisories to evacuate. Such defiance of safety directives is strongly cautioned against and not to be emulated.

In recognition of the severity of the situation, the State Police Commissioner, in consultation with the Police Commissioner in Sudurnes, has declared a state of emergency. Reporters and journalists have been granted access to designated areas near the fire stations, accompanied by responders and equipped with appropriate gear and press credentials.

However, access to the disaster zone remains restricted to responders only, with closure points established at key intersections including Grindavikvegur and Reykjanesbraut, as well as Nesvegur and Suourlandsvegur.
