STORYLINE:
June 3 marks the 41st anniversary of the sister city relationship between China's Chongqing and Seattle in the United States. The Seattle Chinese Garden reflects the deep bond between the two cities.
Chongqing and Seattle became sister cities in 1983. Five years later, the two cities decided to commemorate their friendship by building a Chongqing-style garden in Seattle.
The garden opened to the public in 2011 and serves as a place for Americans to learn about China.
The Seattle Chinese Garden remains the only Chongqing-style garden located outside China. The garden covers an area of about 2.89 hectares and has several Chinese-style yards, a waterscape, and a stream and a pavilion.
Over the years, the two cities have also deepened their ties through exchanges and cooperation in areas such as trade, education and culture.
SOUNDBITE (English): PAIGE MILLER, Vice-president of the Seattle Chinese Garden
"All those exchanges have brought us closer together. We have worked on making the garden happen. I want to see us be able to share with people in the U.S. the Chongqing culture. Most people in the United States do not know Chongqing. And I think the garden will be a means to do that."
