A lake turned an eerie shade of crimson caused by red sand in the Philippines.

The water surrounding Slangan Island has become a tourist destination for its unusual colour due to the rich iron content of land in Lanao del Sur province.

Footage shows a group of holidaymakers travelling to view first hand the red island. The colour of the soil cast a red tinge in the clear water of the lake.

The area is accessible from the mainland via a bamboo bridge that is surrounded by water lilies.

One of the tourists Kuya Rogen said: ‘It was so amazing. It was my first time seeing an island that had that soil colour.'

The formation of red soils is favoured by tropical climates with high temperatures, high rainfall, and distinct wet and dry seasons. The combination of those factors accelerates the weathering and leaching processes that concentrate iron and aluminium oxides in the soil giving it a distinct colour.
