Kuwait City, Kuwait - June 13, 2024

A fire broke out in Kuwait on Wednesday (12.06.2023) leaving at least 49 people dead, while dozens of people were injured in varying degrees of severity as a building in the suburb of Al Mangaf went up in flames. About 200 people, mostly migrant workers from India, were living in the building, officials said.

The tragedy occurred in the morning for reasons that are still unknown and affected the first levels of this building located in the governorate of Al Ahmadi, south of the Kuwaiti capital. It then spread to the upper floors. Eid Al Qwaihan, Director of Forensic Evidence at the Ministry of Interior, explained that most of the deceased died from asphyxiation.
Several local media reported images showing a six-storey building billowing plumes of black smoke. The Indian embassy in Kuwait said that more than 40 of the injured are from India and are admitted to various hospitals. So far, only three of the dead have been identified.
