Italy: Protesters rally in Italian city of Fasano to oppose G7
Fasano, Italy - June 15, 2024
Storyline:
Protesters took to the streets in Fasano City of southern Italy's Apulia region on Saturday, voicing their opposition to the Group of Seven (G7).
The three-day summit of the G7 started on Thursday in Borgo Egnazia, a resort near Fasano, amid protests in many places near the venue.
On the last day of the G7 summit, over a thousand protesters from multiple countries and groups chanted slogans and held banners, denouncing the G7 for forming exclusive circles and their role in escalating the Russia-Ukraine conflict and accusing it of escalating the tensions and stirring up bloc confrontation.
Protesters also highlighted the G7's failure to deliver on their promises of aiding developing countries in combating climate change and reducing the debts of Global South countries.
They emphasized the need to confront non-market policies and practices that undermine fair competition and economic security, saying the G7's contradictory pursuit of trade protectionism will undermine the principles of trade liberalization.
Italy is holding the G7 rotating presidency this year. In addition to the G7 leaders, heads of state from over 10 other countries and international organizations were also invited to attend the summit.
The G7 comprises Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan.
