Hostage crisis at Rostov-on-Don detention center
On June 16, 2024, in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, a hostage situation unfolded at the city's pre-trial detention center No. 1 when prisoners, claiming allegiance to the Islamic State, seized two Federal Penitentiary Service employees. Following negotiations, two ambulances arrived at the scene amidst heightened tension and reports of gunfire. Law enforcement had cordoned off several blocks around the facility, responding to the incident where the attackers, convicted previously for terrorism-related charges, demanded a vehicle and release.
