MAFs couple have "proved doubters" wrong after being married for 10 years
A couple who wed on Married at First Sight USA have "proved the doubters wrong" after celebrating their 10 year anniversary and are now expecting twins."
Jamie Otis, 38, and Doug Hehner, 41, met as strangers on hit reality TV show Married at First Sight in March 2014 - tying the knot the moment they first saw each other.
The pair both admit it wasn't love at first sight and Jamie was sceptical about the pairing at first but they have gone the distance and are now due to add to their brood.
Since the cameras stopped rolling, Jamie and Doug welcomed two children, Henley Grace, six, on August 22, 2017, and Hendrix, four, on May 13, 2020.
Now the loved up pair - who appeared on season one of the show - are expecting identical twin boys, due on Doug's birthday on October 15, 2024.
Jamie, a nurse, from Sarasota, Florida, US, said: "We both really wanted the marriage to work."
"We were both on the show for love and to find someone to spend the rest of our lives with."
"I think by six months we knew we were both committed to each other."
"When I walked down the aisle I was hoping and imagining that Doug and I would be in the position we are today."
"But if you were to tell me on my wedding day that 10 years later we would be having two babies and pregnant with identical twin boys I would be like 'you're absolutely crazy.'"
In 2014, after a brief stint on the Bachelor, Jamie was contacted by a producer on Married at First Sight to appear on the first ever US season.
At the time, Doug was living with his parents in New Jersey, when he got a call from a producer asking him if he would like to feature on the programme.
Jamie said: "It was supposed to be a dating experiment - it was pitched to be a documentary-style show."
"It wasn't supposed to be this big drama, reality TV thing."
"It was like 'listen, we have this experiment, we have these experts. It is scientifically based and we are truly trying to help people find love'."
"I was like 'yeah, that all sounds great.'"
Doug, a podcaster and YouTuber, said: "I was in the same boat as Jamie - as far as dating goes."
"Years before the show I had addiction issues and I was coming out of addiction."
"A lot of the relationships I had outside addiction were failing, it was tough for me to get back out there and go on the dating scene."
"For me the opportunity presented itself after I got cold-called."
After they were assessed by matchmakers, Doug and Jamie were paired together and saw each other for the first time on their wedding day on March 23, 2014.
The couple admit that their relationship was more of a labour of love rather than love at first sight.
Doug said: "It wasn't until the end of the experiment that I was like 'this is someone that I could picture myself being with for the rest of my life'."
"As you got through the six weeks of living together, going through ups and downs and the interviews."
"The thought of getting a divorce or splitting from Jamie was heartbreaking to think of."
When filming for the show stopped, Jamie and Doug moved into their first home together - a townhouse in New Jersey - in 2015.
After that, the pair started trying for a child together but unfortunately in her second trimester, Doug and Jamie lost their first child, Johnathan, in 2016.
Jamie said: "We were very excited to start our family, we got pregnant soon after I took out my birth control."
"We were very excited for that pregnancy and our son."
"Unfortunately he didn't make it, that was obviously devastating and a huge blow to us."
The couple decided to start trying to have a baby again and found out Jamie was pregnant with Henley Grace, on December 20, 2016 - Johnathan's due date.
Henley was born on August 22, 2017, weighing 8lbs 2oz, at 5:24am.
Jamie said: "Holding Henley in our arms for the first time was the first time we could breathe after experiencing the loss of Johnathan."
"I lost Johnathan on our second trimester and traditionally you're safe at that point."
"Holding her and seeing her breathing, and being healthy was the biggest blessing from God."
After the birth of Henley, the couple decided they wanted to grow their family and started trying for another baby.
But Jamie experienced a chemical pregnancy in 2018 and a miscarriage at 10 weeks in January 2019.
Jamie and Doug found out they were expecting with their son Hendrix, four, in WHAT MONTH 2019.
Hendrix was born on May 13, 2020, weighing 9lbs 4oz, at 3:37pm at their family home.
Doug said: "I want to give major props to my wife because she did a natural birth, in a blow up pool in our bedroom."
"It was the first time I really saw my wife as a superhero."
After three more years of trying to get pregnant again, in January 2024, Jamie and Doug found out that they were expecting identical twins.
Jamie said: "Being pregnant has never been easy for us, we would get pregnant and lose the baby."
"We lost three babies together. "
"I wasn't getting pregnant for over three years, we didn't get a positive test and there were times we stopped trying to focus on our marriage."
"We were going to fertility doctors and I said if I was not pregnant by the time it was my birthday I would like to try IVF but I got pregnant."
"That was a very nice surprise, I was praying for identical twins, what are the chances of getting identical twins - it was mind-blowing."
