Stunning male lion is greeted by lioness and then performs the Flehmen Grimace!
Known as The Beast of Balule, this is Total, one of the Masungulo Brothers, Pride males of the Takazile Pride on Balule Nature Reserve (Olifant's West).
As the day draws to an end the Pride starts getting mobile.
The pride male stands as the back as his cubs follow the lionesses... then one lioness comes back and greets him.
He quickly sniffs the female and then performs the Flehmen Grimace - by bearing his teeth and inhaling through his mouth, he allows the pheromones and other scents in the lionesses urine to reach his Jacobson's Organ. Located the base of the lion’s nasal cavity this organ enables him to determine the reproductive status of the lioness.
