Bule_bolang on Instagram shared an adrenaline-pumping adventure that combined a hike through the jungle in a tropical thunderstorm and monsoon with a dramatic volcanic eruption atop Gunung Dukono on June 20, 2024.

On day one, the journey turned perilous as landslides blocked the path, forcing the hikers to climb over trees and debris. The trails transformed into raging rivers, submerging them up to their knees in water and coating them in volcanic ash.

After setting up camp for the night, they pushed on to the summit the next morning, unaware of the explosive surprise awaiting them. Gunung Dukono, known for its daily smoke plumes, erupted with full force as they reached the summit.

The intensity of the experience rivaled the most harrowing moments of the hiker's three years in Afghanistan. The ground shook like an earthquake from the eruption's power, creating an unforgettable spectacle.

On day 1 we hiked through the jungle in the middle of a tropical thunderstorm and monsoon, and encountered landslides which blocked the path in front of us, meaning we had to climb over trees and debris to get there.

The oaths had all become raging rivers up to our knees and the volcanic ash covered us from what to toe.

We then set up camp for the night and pushed on to the summit the next morning. This volcano, named Gunung Dukono in Halmahera Indonesia is know for constantly producing plumes of smoke each day.

But little did we know the moment we reached the summit it was going to full blown erupt for us.

It was the most intense experience of my life and I spent 3 years in Afghanistan in fire fights and this was still more intense. The entire volcano was shaking like an earthquake had hit at the same time from the sheer force of the eruption, it was absolutely incredible.

Well worth the horrific trek to get there.
