The Mount Marapi volcano erupted in Indonesia, sending a towering ash cloud above nearby homes.

Dramatic footage shows the plume rising from the volcano in West Sumatra on Tuesday, September 16.

Officials reported that the exact height of the ash column during this, the second eruption this month, could not be determined due to thick fog in the area.

The volcano remains at alert level 2, with residents banned from entering within a three-kilometre radius of the summit.

Mount Marapi is an active stratovolcano located in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Standing at around 9,485ft, it is one of the most active volcanoes on the island and frequently erupts with ash and lava. Its activity poses ongoing risks to nearby communities, including ashfall and cold lava flows.
