New York, USA - July 08, 2024

The 2024 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) opened on Monday at the UN headquarters in New York, with senior officials calling for immediate commitments to bold policies and innovative solutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2024 HLPF, Paula Narvaez, president of UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), pointed out that the forum serves as an opportunity to identify key policies and priorities that are expected to shape collective efforts by countries to address long-term global challenges, and charts a sustainable and resilient path that ensures no country is left behind.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, addressing the forum, called attention to a sobering fact that less than one fifth of the SDGs are on track.

She called for commitments and solutions from countries around the world to change the status quo as the forum will hear from 47 countries on their progress on the SDGs in the following days.

This year's HLPF, convened under the auspices of the ECOSOC, is themed "reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions".

The edition, which runs from July 8 through 17, aims to assess progress towards several SDGs, including those focused on ending poverty, zero hunger, climate action, peaceful and inclusive societies, and enhancing implementation methods.
