Humboldt County, CA, USA - July 23, 2024

The Hill Fire, located 11 miles south of Willow Creek, has expanded to 7,074 acres with only eight percent containment as of Tuesday morning. Firefighters have made strides in containment efforts due to favorable weather earlier in the week, but challenges persist as conditions worsen.

According to the Hill Fire Incident Command team, tactical firing operations along Forest Road 6N06 have helped establish crucial firebreaks, expanding containment lines and creating a buffer between the fire and surrounding areas. Crews have also utilized unmanned aircraft to assist in nighttime operations, further bolstering containment efforts.

Despite these efforts, the fire's footprint continues to grow, fueled by dry, hot conditions expected to prevail in the coming days. Fire activity is anticipated to increase, posing risks of ignition in unburned areas within the perimeter. Residents in evacuation zones HUM-E076-A, HUM-E077-A, HUM-E077-B, and HUM-E077-C remain under evacuation orders, with others on standby for potential evacuation if conditions deteriorate.
