United States: Park Fire Devastates Butte and Tehama Counties, 277 Structures Destroyed
California, USA - July 29, 2024
[Note: partially no sound]
The Park Fire, now ranked as the state's fifth-largest wildfire on record, continues its destructive path through Butte and Tehama Counties, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.
As of Wednesday morning, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) reported that the blaze has destroyed nearly 300 structures, including homes, commercial buildings, and other facilities. An additional 29 structures have sustained damage due to the fire's relentless spread.
The fire's footprint expanded overnight to encompass 389,791 acres, marking a slight increase from the previous day. Despite efforts to contain it, the blaze remains at 18% containment, posing ongoing challenges to firefighting efforts.
Most of the destruction has occurred in Butte County, where 214 structures have been lost. Damage assessment teams have completed evaluations for 70% of affected areas, providing critical insights into the extent of the devastation.
The Park Fire ignited on July 24 in Upper Bidwell Park in Chico before rapidly spreading northward into Tehama County, where it has consumed the majority of its acreage. Evacuation orders remain in place for thousands of residents, with containment efforts focused on preventing further spread into neighboring areas.
Ronnie Dean Stout II, a Chico resident, faces charges related to starting the fire and appeared in court on Monday for arraignment. However, he did not enter a plea and is scheduled for another court appearance on Thursday.
