STORYLINE:
The Hong Ting Forum, themed "China and Africa Join Hands Together to Modernization," was held in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi Wednesday, drawing dozens of participants, including policymakers, diplomats, industry executives, media personnel and scholars.
Convened by Xinhua News Agency Africa Regional Bureau, the half-day symposium discussed innovative ways to strengthen Sino-African cooperation across diverse sectors and achieve renewal.
There was a consensus among participants at the Hong Ting Forum that both Africa and China have a shared aspiration to prosper and modernize by leveraging partnerships and mutual learning.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): CAVINCE ADHERE, Nairobi-based international relations scholar
"So I believe that even as the two countries jointly built the community of a shared future, that there will be new methods of collaboration that can deliver value targeting you know key sectors such as you know green energy transition, manufacturing, I think China has a lot of capacity at home that some of them could come this side to create jobs and transfer technology and also China is building capacity of young Africans in very many sectors, through scholarships, through official training for government officials and through exchanges even sending Chinese nationals to Kenya to help with the training. So, I think there is an opportunity, all of this contributes to making Kenya a hub of knowledge but also an active area for industrialization. This is good for Africa."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): JULIUS THAIRU, Chief commercial and customer officer of Kenya Airways
"If we look at the immense opportunity between Africa and China, definitely for us to realize that opportunity we need to connect the two continents much better. And that is where our role comes in as an airline to provide easier connectivity between the two continents. I think government is also doing its part with easing access especially to Kenya with removal of visas for Kenya. So definitely access is key, but I think we also need to do a lot to share with the Chinese potential investors, Chinese tourists, what is it they can get from our country Kenya."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): SAMUEL MAINA, Editor-in-chief of Kenya Broadcasting Corporation
"We will learn a lot from China. And that is why we have to enhance the cooperation between China in terms of information flow, in terms of technology, in terms of working together, and learning from them."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Nairobi.
