A naming contest is being held for an adorable newborn pygmy hippo at a zoo in Thailand.

The female baby hippo was born on July 10 at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province to parents Jona and Tony, both 25 years old.

An event is being held to celebrate its birth and the Thai National Mother's Day in honour of Queen Sirikit.

Footage shows the adorable hippo staying close to its mum during feeding time. The baby hippo rested on the floor while the mum was busy tucking in a tub full of vegetables.

Voters can choose from three names: Moo Deng, or bouncy port, Moo Dang, or red pork, or Moo Sub, or minced pork. The winning name will be announced on August 20.

Those who choose the winning name will also be eligible for a raffle draw for limited-edition capybara dolls and plants made for the zoo's 46th anniversary.

Thai National Mother's Day is celebrated annually on August 12, the birthday of Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother of Thailand.
