STORYLINE:
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani on Tuesday called on the international community to exert intensive pressure to complete a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
During a meeting in the northwestern Egyptian city of New Alamein, the two leaders exchanged views on ways to help the Middle East overcome its serious crises threatening regional stability and capabilities, and jointly called for calm and regional de-escalation, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.
They underlined the need to end the humanitarian plight in the Gaza Strip and stop the ongoing Israeli escalation in the West Bank, it said.
They also called for the launch of a serious political track that guarantees the Palestinian people's legitimate and just right to build an independent state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, to establish peace, security and development in the region, said the statement.
Meanwhile, the two sides expressed satisfaction with the distinct level of bilateral relations, with Sisi underscoring Egypt's full support for Iraq's unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, it said.
Both sides also discussed bilateral cooperation, especially in areas such as mutual investment, infrastructure, urban development, tourism, energy, transport, and industry, it added.
