China: Chongqing takes proactive measures to tackle extreme heat
Chongqing, China - Recent
Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has rolled out a series of proactive measures to tackle extreme heat, including patrolling activities and wildfire prevention.
Dubbed "furnace city" due to its scorching summers, Chongqing has maintained a red alert for 11 consecutive days for high temperatures, the highest level in China's high-temperature alert system.
The city has mobilized forestry, emergency response and fire departments to monitor outdoor fire activities, enhancing fire prevention measures.
In response to the high temperatures, Tieshanping Forest Park, located in Jiangbei District of Chongqing, strictly prevents any ignition sources from entering the mountains by increasing the frequency of the patrolling activities, extending patrol hours, among others.
"Due to high stress of fire prevention in the forest area, we conduct patrols and awareness campaigns every day, and confiscate ignition sources from vehicles entering the forest area," said Song Zhichuang, firefighter at the Chongqing fire department under National Fire and Rescue Administration.
Meanwhile, in the rice fields of Zhuxi Town's Pingxi Village, the local agricultural department has organized agricultural technicians to provide technical guidance to farmers to minimize the impact of high temperatures on the growth of rice plants. Also, local authorities have pumped river water into the water diversion channel for irrigation.
In addition, according to Dadukou District's urban management bureau, it has carried out carpet-like irrigation for parks, streetside gardens, squares, and green belts across the entire district.
"Adhering to the principle of water conservation, the park management department has implemented irrigation in different time periods, increased watering during the night and morning, extended watering durations, reduced water evaporation, and improved efficiency of watering," said Bai Jing, staff member of park management office, Dadukou District's urban management bureau.
