STORYLINE:
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud discussed on Sunday ways to jointly confront challenges affecting regional security and peace.
In a phone conversation, the two leaders stressed the necessity of reaching an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and stopping the escalation in the West Bank. These measures are necessary to restoring stability to the region, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.
Egypt, along with Qatar and the United States, is leading mediation efforts to reach a truce and a hostage-prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Hamas. The ultimate goal is a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
Gaza-based health authorities issued an updated Palestinian death toll on Sunday. After nearly 11 months of Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, the figure has now risen to 40,738.
