STORYLINE:

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus implored the international community on Sunday to provide urgent humanitarian support to the Sudanese people.

The WHO chief made the remarks at a press conference in Port Sudan, the capital city of Sudan's Red Sea State.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): TEDROS ADHANOM GHEBREYESUS, WHO Director-General
"14.7 million (people) require urgent assistance for a range of life-saving support, for which the humanitarian sector has requested 2.7 billion U.S. dollars, which is less than half funded. But we must focus on all people in need, all 25 million people, and this means additional resources are required to meet their needs."

The majority of the Sudanese people are now suffering from famine and disease outbreaks, Ghebreyesus said.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): TEDROS ADHANOM GHEBREYESUS, WHO Director-General
"Over 500 days of conflict, the largest level of displacement in the world, famine in some parts and risk of death in others. 25.6 million people, over half of the Sudanese population, are expected to face a high level of acute food insecurity. Disasters including flooding lead to dams bursting disease outbreaks including cholera, malaria, dengue and measles with the risk of mpox."

Ghebreyesus met on Sunday with the Chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.

The WHO chief's visit comes at a time when Sudan is witnessing the spread of seasonal diseases related to rainfall.

The Sudanese Health Ministry said Saturday that recent heavy rains have killed 205 people. Meanwhile, according to the data, the country has registered 176 cholera deaths and 5,081 cases.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a deadly conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. This has resulted in the loss of at least 16,650 lives.
