STORYLINE:
Egypt's Rafah crossing has been closed since the Israeli army announced the imposition of its control over the Palestinian side on May 7, leading to a suspension of aid truck entries from Egypt into Gaza.
High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, condemned the Gaza crisis as "human-made" and stressed the need for a political resolution during his visit to Egypt's Rafah border crossing with Gaza on Monday.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): JOSEP BORRELL, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
"I see Rafah crossing almost every day through the eyes of the satellites and I know that there are thousands of trucks waiting to enter per day, per week, per month.
What's happening in the other side of this wall is not a crisis created by nature.
It is a human-made crisis, a human-made tragedy.
We have to look for a political solution, because to feed someone with a dinner tonight, in order to be killed tomorrow, is not exactly the solution. We have to provide humanitarian support, because it is urgent and necessary. And we have to do more and quicker.
We have to continue asking for the ceasefire, the release of hostages, and stopping the bombing, ceasefire."
In North Sinai, an Egyptian province bordering Gaza, aid piled up in a warehouse. Meanwhile, aid trucks ready for entry have lined up on the road near the distribution center.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): KHALED MUGAWER, North Sinai Governor
"We are ready for all scenarios and worst-case scenarios in terms of aid entry. If the crossing opens, we are ready with large numbers to send aid, and if wounded people enter, we have a comprehensive plan not only at the governorate level but at the nationwide level."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Rafah, Egypt.
