Riot police fire water cannon on Hindus protesting over illegal mosque
Riot police fired water cannons on Hindu protesters who were demanding the demolition of an illegal mosque in India.
Officers from Mandi Police Station in Himachal Pradesh built blockades to keep the angry demonstrators from various Hindu organisations from marching towards the religious buildings which they claimed were illegal.
Footage shows a truck spraying water to break apart the lines of people trying to cross the blockade on Friday, September 13.
Following protests, the Municipal Court ordered a portion of the structure that allegedly encroached on another property to be removed within 30 days.
Commissioner HS Rana said: ‘A complaint was lodged by a resident about encroachment by Muslim Welfare Society that owns the mosque.'
The conflict between Hindus and Muslims in India has deep historical, social, and political roots.
The partition of British India into India and Pakistan was based largely on religious lines, with India being predominantly Hindu and Pakistan being created as a Muslim-majority state.
This led to one of the largest mass migrations in history and violent communal riots.
