A hawker was arrested for allegedly selling snakeskin for use in traditional Chinese medicine.

The elderly man was reportedly selling a snakeskin at a medical conference when police in China intervened, stating he had violated animal protection laws.

The bizarre attempt to profit from it occurred when he drove to the Anhui Bozhou Pharmaceutical Expo on September 10 and attempted to sell it.

He struggled to answer questions about its origin but mingled with others selling medicinal materials, offering a snakeskin measuring around 40 centimetres in diameter and around 5 metres.

To load it onto his tricycle, he had to fold it several times to fit into the small space.

The main issue arose when the elderly man could not explain where he got it, putting him in breach of the country's stuffed animal protection laws, even though the snakeskin was ancient and, in all likelihood, he had not killed it.

He was arrested by police and taken away for questioning while the snakeskin and his tricycle were confiscated.
