Cyclists pedal on streets for World Car Free Day
Cyclists pedalled on car-free roads to celebrate World Car Free Day in the Philippines.
Hundreds of bikers led by non-government group Firefly Brigade rode along several streets across Metro Manila on September 22 to advocate for alternative modes of travel.
Footage shows participants coasting along the bike lane of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in the congested city notorious for having the 'world's worst traffic'.
The itinerary included Emerald Avenue in Pasig City, Mayflower Street in Mandaluyong City, Ayala Avenue in Makati City, and a portion of Roxas Boulevard in Manila.
Local authorities have declared these roads car free during certain hours on Sundays to encourage walking and cycling.
The Firefly Brigade has been advocating for a shift away from Manila's car-centric culture.
TomTom International BV, a multinational traffic data provider, branded Manila - the Philippines' economic centre - as having the 'world's worst traffic in a metro area' in 2023. The company said drivers in the city spent an average of 25 minutes and 30 seconds to travel six miles.
The gridlock is the worst on Friday nights - infamously known among locals as 'carmageddon' - when travel time grinds to a halt at 35 minutes and 30 seconds per six miles.
The traffic problem is partially blamed on an unreliable and equally congested public transport system prone to perennial breakdowns.
