SOUNDBITE (Chinese): BAO YIMING, Doctor from the 13th Chinese medical team to Papua New Guinea
"Hello, I am Bao Yiming, deputy head of the 13th Chinese medical team to Papua New Guinea. I come from Chongqing University Three Gorges Hospital. Today is Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024, which is also a date for me to perform surgeries. I am now in the last week of my (one-year) medical aid mission at Port Moresby General Hospital in Papua New Guinea.
I aid the department of obstetrics and gynecology. Today, as usual, I started with a shift handover and a case discussion. After taking over the shift, I came to the ward and check the patient who had undergone a laparoscopic surgery yesterday. The patient was in good spirits and recovering quite well. After changing the dressing, I explained the precautions to the patient, and she can be discharged today.
After completing the rounds, I came to the operating room. After changing into my scrubs, I conducted a preoperative check on the patient. The surgery was successfully completed with everyone's cooperation.
Looking back over the past year, it feels like I set foot on the land of Papua New Guinea just yesterday.
Since I came to Port Moresby General Hospital, I have helped integrate surgical instruments into two sets, reducing patients' waiting time for surgeries and boosting the efficiency of laparoscopic operations.
At the same time, I have also trained three doctors who are now capable of independently performing laparoscopic surgeries. I also extended my work beyond Port Moresby General Hospital by offering free clinical treatment to local residents and overseas Chinese to alleviate their health issues.
Oct. 3 is also my birthday. After the surgery, my colleagues in the obstetrics and gynecology operating room surprised me with a birthday cake. This made me feel not lonely in a foreign land, and we expressed our reluctance to part with each other.
Since 2002, China has dispatched a total of 13 batches of medical teams to Papua New Guinea over 22 years. Since the 13th Chinese medical team arrived in Papua New Guinea last October, it has received over 20,000 visits by local residents, demonstrated and guided over 700 surgeries, and introduced more than 140 new clinical techniques."
