Traditional Filipino tribal dance captivates onlookers
Students performed the traditional Filipino dance ‘singkil' over snapping bamboo sticks.
Footage shows the youngsters wearing gold, red, and green clothing with intricate designs while weaving in and out of crisscrossed poles in Marawi City, the Philippines, on September 24.
The performance captivated onlookers who watched from the balconies of their classrooms during the Dansalan Polytechnic College's 23rd founding anniversary.
One of the students who watched the event said: ‘There were eight teams that performed. Singkil caught all the attention. It was so beautiful.'
Singkil is a traditional Filipino folk dance from the Maranao people of Mindanao in the south. It features a lead female dancer, often representing a princess and a male dancer representing her prince.
They step and hop between two parallel bamboo poles that are tapped and slid on the ground. Precise timing is critical since the poles open and close rapidly, and the dancer must avoid getting their feet caught.
