STORYLINE:
A pair of giant pandas boarded an airplane in the early hours of Tuesday in southwest China. The pandas will settle down at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in the U.S. capital of Washington, D.C.
This is the second time this year that China has sent giant pandas to the United States.
The three-year-old pandas departed their hometown in Sichuan Province as part of a 10-year international giant panda protection cooperation program. Bao Li, a male, and Qing Bao, a female, were accompanied by an experienced breeder and veterinarian, according to the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP). With help, the pandas are expected to quickly adapt to their new environment at the American zoo.
