STORYLINE:
Media leaders from around the globe have gathered at the 6th World Media Summit in northwest China's Xinjiang under the theme of "AI and Media Transformation."
Representatives from 208 institutions, including media outlets, government agencies and international organizations, engaged in discussions highlighting the transformative impact of AI on the global media industry.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): JONATHAN WELLS, President of Sipa USA
"I think that AI is and will continue to be used as a tool to make the job of a journalist, the job of media, more efficient, perhaps even more profitable by creating new products, increasing the speed of distribution of the work and doing some of the work that should not maybe be done by journalists, but by machines to allow journalists to do more of their work."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): RENAT ZAKIEV, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Russia
"It's (AI) very important because it's not very simple technology and only in cooperation can we create the rules of using these technologies."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): VIASEN SOOBRAMONEY, Chairman of the Editorial Board, Independent Media, South Africa
"I think, firstly, the summit is very useful in terms of demystifying AI. We have to look at how we can use it effectively and responsibly. I think that's what the summit is about."
SOUNDBITE 4 (English): SHAMSUN NAHAR KHAN, Executive Editor, United News of Bangladesh
"China is a leader when it comes to AI technology. And they're really paving the way for the future. The government has taken on a very active role when it comes to embracing AI technology. We very much look forward to working with China. China has an inspiring story."
SOUNDBITE 5 (English): JOE SENE, Head of Pictures, PA Media, UK
"I think embracing AI to a degree will help companies be more competitive in the digital world. And certainly, there's going to be lots of competition in this space from non-traditional media publishers too."
SOUNDBITE 6 (English): GEORGE HERMING GAUAKALO, Director, Government Communication Unit, Solomon Islands
"I am here to learn more from other countries that have advanced technologies in terms of the use of AI which is an important platform but it's also crucial that we also understand where to draw the boundaries (of AI) and where to use AI."
SOUNDBITE 7 (English): TAMAS KOVACS, CEO, ATV Media Group, Hungary
"AI is inevitable, I think the heart of media, truth and facts. And we can preserve this value of media. And it's our main task to strengthen our journalist ethical standard in AI media."
The summit gathered over 500 participants from 106 countries and regions.
